Lights, Camera, Action! !This Diorama project was brilliant. The senior room created Stop Motion videos from scratch. First they had to choose a genre, a human character, an animal character and a setting. They created a plot and then constructed their sets and made their characters from márla. Filming then began and music was added- the results were impressive. Definite film makers of the future!
The Oscars here we come!!!!
We were delighted to welcome Sharon Cameron from An Taisce to our school on Thursday 13th February. We really enjoyed telling her about all the wonderful work we are doing as we work towards getting our Gobal Citizenship Energy Green Flag. We have learned so much about Global Citizenship. We learned about Equality and inclusion, Anti-Racism, Refugees around the world and in Ireland, Fairtrade, Friendship and Solidarity and the Global Goals.
The specific focus on energy this year has really heightened our awareness of how we can conserve energy at school and in our homes. We have reduced our daily consumption in school by 31% by making very simple changes- turning off lights and appliances when they are not needed. The motto “You’ve got nerve if you don’t conserve” helps us to remember.
We have continued our great work with Reducing, Reusing and Recycling and really enjoyed the Eco-Bricks project this year. Biodiversity is still very much at the heart of our school and we strive to keep our School Garden in full bloom during the Spring, Summer and Autumn months. We look forward to getting back to work in it in the coming weeks.
We learned about Fairtrade at assembly this week. Fairtrade is based on a partnership between some of the most disadvantaged farmers and workers in the developing world and the people who buy their products. When farmers sell on Fairtrade terms it provides them with a better deal-an opportunity to improve their lives and plan for the future. We decided to bake a fairtrade cake to raise awareness about Fairtrade products. We made a banana and chocolate cake. It was delicious. It was a fun way to learn about Fairtrade produce.
We learned a lot about Sustainable energy and renewable sources. We worked on STEM projects building a wind turbine (Wind Power), a log splitter (Water Power), a solar car (Solar Power) and a catapult (Elasticity Power). These projects enabled us to see first hand how these energy sources work and how effective they are.
Sincere thanks to all families who very generously made Shoeboxes for the TeamHope appeal. This year we sent away over 40 boxes. We look forward to hearing where they were delivered this year.
