Cycle for Fun

The senior pupils are delighted to be participating in the Cycle for Life programme with Jerry Towey this month. He is doing a brilliant job teaching us how to cycle safely. We are really enjoying the games and look forward to going for a cycle on the road at the end of the course. Thank you Jerry for boosting our confidence of our bikes.

Grandparent’s Day

We had some very special visitors in Carrakennedy last Friday to celebrate Grandparent’s Day. They came from near and far to celebrate with us even Ms. Hester’s Granny Liz joined us for the occasion. We had a wonderful afternoon of music, chats and showing them around the school. It was a change from our usual Friday assembly- this week our Grandparents were the shining stars! They all really deserved their awards. Thank you for coming.

Wild Nephin “Call of the Wild” Roadshow

We were absolutely delighted to welcome Michael and Sinéad from Wild Nephin National Park this week. The “Call of the Wild” roadshow was really interesting. We learned a lot about our National Park- the wild animals, plants and bog life that exists there. We leaned lots of new facts. It was a real treat seeing the stuffed animals and examining smaller species under the microscope. Thank you for a great workshop. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Santa Hat Run

What a way to start 2023- we were delighted to do our Santa hat run today after it was postponed before the holidays due to the yellow weather warning.

The senior room children all participated and really enjoyed the run. Well done everyone- The Daily Mile is really boosting our fitness.

We look forward to our next run before the Easter holidays.

December Update

We have had a fun filled month in Carrakennedy NS and really enjoyed the build up to Christmas. We kicked off the festivities on 25th November- the day of the Late Late Toy show. The Junior room presented their project to us at assembly and we learned a lot about the history of the Toy Show.

In keeping with tradition we made our Advent wreath and were delighted each week to light the candles and celebrate the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.

On the 4th December we took to the stage in Cushlough Community Centre and sang some of our Christmas songs. It was a really enjoyable afternoon and really put us in the Christmas spirit.

The arrival of Eddie the Elf was a huge surprise for us in Carrakennedy NS. He has been very busy this month and has brought a few surprises to us also- the highlight of which was the movie day. We were delighted to have popcorn and hot chocolate while watching the classic Home Alone.

All in all, we have had a great month- lots of art and music and fun activities. We are looking forward to the Christmas break now and will be ready to return on Thursday 5th December. Keep an eye out for our next post with photos of our Santa Hat run which will take place on Friday 6th January- a nice way to round up the festivities.

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas- enjoy the family time together.

Rugby Blitz

The 5th and 6th class pupils enjoyed a fun day at the Rugby Blitz this month. We are very thankful to Claire Coughlan from Connaught GAA for coaching us and inviting us to the blitz. It was a great day. We look forward to more rugby next term.

Moclair Cup

We were delighted to welcome past pupils Aaron Dunne and Brian O’Malley along with Cónal Dawson and Kieran Geraghty to our school this week. We really enjoyed the visit and loved hearing all about the journey to winning the Moclair Cup. Well done Westport GAA we are very proud to be part of the club.

Happy Halloween

There was no sign of the boys and girls of Carrakennedy in school in Friday- look who turned up in their place! We had a great day with these characters and creatures. Let’s hope the boys and girls will come back to school on Monday 7th November! Happy Holidays everyone!

Cross Country

Well done to the boys and girls in the senior room who took part in the Mayo schools cross country in Ballyvary at the end of September. 3 children- Odhrán Gavin, Rheanna Hoban and Rían Gavin went on to represent the school in the Mayo county cross country in Ballina doing both themselves and the school proud. Odhrán came in 3rd place earning himself a bronze medal and a place in the Connaught cross country final in Longford. On Saturday he ran a magnificent race in really tough conditions and won a medal as he finished in 15th place. Well done Odhrán what a wonderful achievement- a bronze medal in Connaught.

Mini 7’s

The girls and boys in the senior room took part in the Cumann na mBunscol Mini 7’s competition last week. This year we joined forces with the pupils of Killawalla NS.  On Thursday the girls played 2 wonderful matches but unfortunately lost out to the Quay school when the game went to golden score.

On Friday the boys played 4 superb games making it to the final against Brackloon. Unfortunately, it was not their day. We are so proud of them making it to the final. The children are really looking forward to Cumann na mBunscol season next Spring.
