We were absolutely thrilled to welcome our past pupil Maria McDonnell back to the school today with her teammates Katie, Aoibhinn and Lauren from the Mayo Under 14 Girls all Ireland winning team. They answered all our questions, allowed us to hold the cup and even did some drills with us on the pitch. It was great to hear about their journey this year from training to winning the all Ireland. A huge achievement for these 4 girls. Well done and thank you for sharing your win with us.
We had a wonderful celebration in the school last Friday to say farewell to our wonderful 6th class pupils Caitlin, Charlie, Katherine, Mark, Rheanna and Rían. They were a truly wonderful 6th class and we will be very sad to see them go. We wish them the very best in their next chapter of life and look forward to when they come back to visit. We also marked the end of the Junior room for our 2nd class pupils- Cillian, Harry, Isabelle, Katie and Shauna. Ms Hester will be sad to see them leave the Junior room while Ms McPaul is very excited about welcoming them to the Junior room. The children read, sang and even drummed for the occasion. It was a super afternoon.
We are so proud of the children of Carrakennedy who completed the Walk/Run for Burundi last Friday. Together they raised €1,685.75 for the people of Burundi. We presented Bernie Heraty who will send it directly to Laura in Burundi. We look forward to hearing how the money was used and how the people of Burundi benefitted from our generosity. Sincere thanks to all who donated for this worthy cause.
What an amazing week we have had in Carrakennedy NS for Active Schools Week. We finished it off nicely today with our annual Sports Day. We had great fun in the morning with our races especially the Novelty race. We were delighted to hear the Ice-cream van coming up the road at 11am for our little break. What a great surprise. This gave us plenty of energy for the next part of the day for co-operative games, rounders and the obstacle course. We were glad of the delicious BBQ at lunch time. Thanks to Bernadette for cooking it. When the Junior and Senior Infants went home we split into three teams to play football to finish the day. Thank you to the parents and past pupils who joined our teams to make us even stronger!!
We will all sleep tonight after a hectic week.
We had great fun at the Pat Cox Hurling blitz in Westport GAA today. We won two of our matches and lost one which meant we didn’t qualify from our group. That did not dampen our spirits as we stayed on to watch the finals. Well done to all who took part on the day. A special mention to Tim Campion for coaching us this year and really improving our hurling skills and to Darragh Hoban who joined us on the day to help out.
We have worked very hard in the garden this term and some of the days were in the sweltering heat! We have planted carrots, potatoes, onions and pumpkins. We look forward to harvesting them next year. If you are up playing on the pitch over the summer maybe pop into the garden for a few minutes- pick a few weeds or sprinkle some water on the produce. If we all give a helping hand it will make a huge difference to the school garden.
A bitter sweet day in McHale Park today for the boys and girls of Carrakennedy NS. We were absolutely thrilled that both of our teams made it this far- to the Cumann na mBunscol final. A huge achievement in itself.
The girls were up first and played a thrilling game against Binghamstown. The game went to extra time and it was point for point on both sides. The Carrakennedy girls pulled through and won the game by scoring a point in the final minute. They were outstanding and never gave up. The cup has come back to Carrakennedy for the second year in a row. We are so proud of you girls- well done you were superb.
The boys were next up and played an equally thrilling game. There was absolutely brilliant football on display by both teams- Carrakennedy NS and Mount Palmer. They never gave up and fought to the bitter end. Unfortunately, in the final kick of the game Mount Palmer scored the match winner. Boys were are so proud of you no matter- win, lose or draw. Hold your heads up high after an outstanding season in blue.
We can take huge pride in the way we carried ourselves all year on our football journey. A massive thank you to Pat Gavin and Martin Conway for being with us every step or should we say kick of the way! We look forward to more outings next year.
National Concert Hall
Congratulations and well done to Caitlin, Katherine, Lauren and Lucy who represented the school and sang in The National Concert Hall last week as part of the National Children’s Choir. The girls sang their hearts out alongside children from all over Ireland. One very special guest was in attendance that night in The National Concert Hall- our President Michael D. Higgins. Have a look at the photos- he absolutely loved the singing too. Well done girls we are so proud of you.
A huge thank you to parents Sinéad Conway and Seán O’Malley for delivering the STEM packs from Abbvie to all pupils in the school. The packs are full to the brim with fun STEM activities for the children. We made the sponge water soakers and really enjoyed trying them out last week during the roasting weather. We made up some fun games to go with them and then enjoyed a great water fight on the pitch!! Thank you Abbvie and Volunteer Ireland for organising these packs.
The boys and girls of Carrakennedy are on a winning streak and look forward to the County Finals in McHale Park in a few weeks.
Both teams played two epic games in the quarter finals in Westport GAA last week- girls against Manulla and boys against Crimlin paving our way to the semi-finals.
The teams played two cracking semi-finals in Park Josie Munnelly this week- girls against Craggagh and boys against Derrinabroc emerging victrious in both games. This sets us up for an historic double attempt – BOYS and GIRLS in the Cumann na mBunscol Finals.
CARRAKENNEDY ABÚ!!
