Today, we were very fortunate to welcome two lovely Guides from Connemara National Park. Both the Junior and Senior room got the chance to observe a huge range of Mammals and antlers. We learnt that a taxidermist is a person whose job is to prepare the skins of dead animals and birds and fill them with a special material to make them look as if they are alive. The mammals that we got to see were a fox, a hare, a badger, an otter, a pine marten, a mink, a stoat, a hedgehog and a squirrel. We were given lots of facts about the animals. Did you know a baby hare is called a leveret? An otter spends 8 hours a day in water. The mink originally came from America and lives by water. The stoat, even though a small animal, is a good hunter and can even kill rabbits! Lastly, we got to hold the antlers from a stag which is a male deer. What an informative day in Carrakennedy!
